Joseph K. Eyre was born in 1810 in New Jersey.[1] It is unclear when he moved to Lower Merion, but he was on the property by 1850 according to the census log for that year.[2] He used the land for farming, and though he did not have servants, he did hire farmhands to help with the tasks necessary for running a farm. These farmhands were predominantly from Pennsylvania and Ireland, and often if the farmhands were married, their wives would work in the house as domestic servants.[3] He and his wife Anna had five children: Charles (1843), Emily (1846), Edward (1848), Elizabeth (1852), and Ella (1857).[4] In 1886, Eyre sold the property to Effingham B. Morris.[5]
